Internet speed can vary greatly around the world as different countries invest to a differing amount in their network infrastructure. Generally, the more developed world, such as Europe and North America, have greater internet speeds as many of the world’s largest economies and tech companies are found there, and they rely on high speed communications to function. Asia, however has been catching up, with South Korea consistently achieving some amongst the fastest internet speed along with Hong Kong for many years. And now, many of the continents fast growing economies are catching up.

Akamai’s long running State of the Internet report has recently published figures that confirm that the continent is catching up. With the global average internet speed being around 4.6 Mbps, many countries in Asia achieve speeds faster than that, such as 6.3 Mbps in Thailand and 9.5 Mbps in Taiwan. Interestingly, though, India and China fair less well, with China achieving and average of 3.7 Mbps and India coming bottom of the rankings in Asia with 2 Mbps. This is significant, as both countries have been experiencing a surge in their high tech economies as more and more western companies outsource business to the two countries.

Internet Speed Peaks

These internet speed figures are further complemented by figures outlining the amount of peak bandwidth. The global average is 25.4 Mbps, and whilst Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan all achieve higher internet speeds of 30.5 Mbps, 41.3 Mbps and 58.2 Mbps respectively, India once again comes bottom of the list with 14.4 Mbps, followed by China at 17.4 Mbps. In comparison, Asia’s best achiever, Hong Kong, experiences an average peak internet speed of 73.9 Mbps.

To make matters worse for India, the country also has the lowest average mobile internet speed of 1.4 Mbps. This crucial aspect of connectivity has proved important in the past few years as more and more people in the developing world access data from cheap mobile enabled devices.
